HSE to launch Health Inspection Initiative during October focusing on respiratory hazards

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be carrying out its latest construction inspection initiative throughout October 2018, focusing on the measures in place to protect workers from occupational lung disease caused by asbestos, silicosis, wood dust and other hazards.

As part of the October health initiative, the HSE will be actively promoting its initiative across its social media channels to help raise awareness around the health issues construction workers face and improve awareness around potential site risks and appropriate mitigation. The Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) provides free access to a library of resources on ill health and disease in the construction industry, including specific information on respiratory disease. Available tools include videos, case studies and wider reading materials, all of which are available on the HCLG website.

Also available is further information on other industry-wide campaigns such as: the British Occupational Hygiene Society’s Breathe Freely campaign, which provides construction companies free guidance and resources on preventing occupational lung disease; the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s No Time To Lose Campaign, which focuses specifically on the prevention of occupational cancers; and the HSE’s Go Home Healthy Campaign.
