HCLG's SILICA HUB - Now Live!

The brand-new Silica Hub has been created by the HCLG's Respiratory Working Group, in collaboration with the Construction Dust Partnership. The idea behind the collaboration followed the old adage; 'Together Everyone Achieves More' (TEAM)!

After initial discussions, we concluded that the biggest respiratory challenge facing the construction sector right now is Silica Dust, and whilst there are lots of resources available to help contractors navigate management of this hazard, it can be quite daunting.

As such, we wanted to create a 'hub' of information that was really easy to follow.

First of all, we decided to break down the information into three areas of responsibility:

  • Directors & Senior Leadership

  • Managers & Team Leaders

  • Employees & Sub-contractors

We then decided to come up with an easy-to-remember acronym, 'RACE':

  • Risk Assessment

  • Awareness

  • Control

  • Evaluation

We applied the 'RACE' strategy to all three levels of responsibility, and then matched-up readiliy available resources.

It is currently estimated that over 600,000 UK workers are exposed to Respirable Crystalline Silica dust (RCS) each year, and as a result, 500 construction workers die annually. Our hope is that the 'Silica Hub' will help workers at all levels understand how they can reduce exposure to silica dust, so that the number of people suffering from fatal health conditions like Silicosis, is reduced.
